A purposeful community
TEDxCapeTownWomen is a purposeful community of passionate people who question the status quo, desire a more equitable Cape Town, and have ideas worth spreading. Established in 2013, we have hosted # events across Cape Town with # speakers, reaching over # people both in-person and online through our YouTube channel. Our ideas are spread through community engagement programmes, inspiring interviews and stories, and the main live event each December where a carefully curated lineup of speakers will interrogate the year's theme from a uniquely feminist, African perspective. This year's theme is Bold+Brilliant, and we're bringing you an event, and speakers, that embody just that.
Our 2019 event is held in parallel with the global TEDWomen 2019 event in Palm Springs, California, USA, and South Africa's 16 Days of Activism to eradicate violence against women and children across the country. Join our #TEDxCapeTownWomen community to stay in touch with these #IdeasWorthSpreading.
TEDxCapeTownWomen is an offshoot of TEDxCapeTown desigend to encourage broader inclusion in TEDx events. TEDxCapeTown is one of the largest TEDx events on the African continent. Together, the two events compliment the spread of powerful, innovative ideas across Cape Town, South Africa, and the world more broadly.
About TEDx, x = independently organised event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organised events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organised TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised.
More info about the TEDx program can be found here: www.ted.com/tedx
TED is a nonprofit organisation devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self-organised TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
